Without change, seniors, single parents, and veterans will continue to struggle to remain housed or to manage their finances to prevent arrears and eviction. Senior homelessness is rising and rent increases are forcing seniors to make terrible decisions between medications or heat in order to pay their landlord’s rent increase.
Rent stabilization would provide renters with predictability so they can plan for rent increases in coming years.
HB 1217 / SB 5222 will stabilize rents for seniors, single parents, and veterans by:
- setting a reasonable limit of 7% per year for rent increases
- giving renters 6 months notice of big increases in rent
- encouraging new housing with a 10 year exemption for new buildings
